Girls On Tape duo of Rinus Van Alebeek and Jeff Surak, joined by Olga Nosova
Improvisation using tapes and walkmen as the primary means to create semi-narrative forms and environments.
Rinus van Alebeek is editor of Staalzine, responsible for Staalplaat's Staaltape, founder of Radio On, radiomaker/editor, artistic director of Porticello Artist Residencies and writer. He has a knack for revealing the hidden aspects and traces of modern life with his questing microphones and glitchy cassette tapes, resulting in magical-realist documents that seem dreamlike in their vividness and impossible beauty. Instead of telling us something, it always seems that Rinus is trying to find out things, exploring or discovering an aspect of the world which he regards as a mystery, and not proceeding with any foregone conclusions in mind. http://rinusvanalebeek.com
Jeff Surak started in the early 80s participating in the international hometaper network. He operates in the netherworld between composed and improvised soun, moving between musique concrete, drone, noise, & free improvisation using whatever sound implements at hand. His primary projects include -1348-, New Carrollton, V., and Violet. He has collaborated with such artists as Alexei Borisov, Zan Hoffman, Bertrand Denzler, Rinus Van Alebeek, Marta Zapparoli, Frans De Waard, Michael Gendreau, Lina Lapelyte, and as Dead Violets with Thomas Ekelund, and as Critikal with Dmytro Fedorenko. Surak runs the Zeromoon label and directs the annual Sonic Circuits Festival in Washington DC. http://violet.zeromoon.com
