Miki Yui - MILLS
Miki Yui presents her new album MILLS together with live video by Guillaume Cailleau. Field recordings, delicate tiny hiss to a distant hum, sounds of objects and electronic sounds are woven into airy and sparse molecule in a space. She plays samplers and solar oscillators.

Miki Yui is a Japanese artist based in Düsseldorf. Ever since her first album „small sounds“ in 1999 she is known for her unique minimalist and organic approach towards composition. Dirk Johan Stromberg - Endeavors in Ascension
Dirk’s work with ascension was created originally to continue a discussion about the rarity of works that ascend in pitch material - the overwhelming majority of works composed in the world descend - that was had between Dirk Stromberg and Robert Reigle in winter of 2016. His explorations have included a series of videos with director Clare Chong as well as a VR implementation of the work. Currently, Dirk is exploring Endeavours of Ascension as an improvisation concept to explore the possibilities of his instrument, the Phallophone.

E-luthier Dirk Stromberg has been developing instruments that offer dynamic and musical interaction and has recently (2015) created his a new instrument, the Phallophone. The Phallophone, was developed to be a versatile and instrument free of genre with a diverse voice. In its application by its creator, the instrument tries to demystify avant-garde and experimental music by having a “clear transparent, intuitive control metamorphosis with a clear audio-visual link” (Cedric Spindler).

The Phallophone is a sensor based instrument with pitch and amplitude manipulation via a pressure sensitive neck - built to a similar scale to a guitar. Timbre is controlled via two mini joysticks for the left index and ring fingers as well as an accelerometer. There is a microphone input that is processed by the same engine as processes the synthesis engines. All sensors connect via a teensy 3.6 and then to a Raspberry Pi 3. The software uses a number of synths in both PD and Csound. The principle concept of sound manipulation is derived from the visual concept of tristimulus (the RGB color wheel).

Dirk has been touring with the instrument since 2016 and has brought it to the EU, North America and Asia. Stylistically, concerts have included free improvisation, free jazz, soundpainting, chamber music, and notated music.

Dirk Johan Stromberg is an American music technologist, composer and improviser. His body of work explores dynamic interaction between performer, technology and performance practice. Designing both hardware and software has led to the development of network based audio cards, embedded hardware, and e-instruments. Dirk’s music has been performed in Europe, Asia and North America. He as thrice worked on Art Creation Funds supported by the National Arts Council, Singapore – a major arts development grant. First as an instrument designer in 2010 for Joyce Koh’s “On the String” then as a collaborating composer, system designer, engineer and e-luthier for Robert Casteels’ 2014 work “2014:time:space:”, which has subsequently toured Europe and Asia as a collaborative community work.He is currently collaborating on his third Arts Creation Fund as a composer and technology integrator for a premiere exhibition in December 2017.

He has been composer in residence at STEIM (Studio for Electronic Instrumental Music) and Brooklyn Center for Computer Music and has received recognition for his work from ISAM (Institute for Study in American Music) and MATA (Music at the Anthology). He has also been artist in Residence twice at SLOSS Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama, which culminated in the trans-disciplinary work “Convergence” in 2016. Dirk Stromberg has been invited to present his work as a composer and technologist at a number of international conferences and festivals including, Music Tech Fest ( Umea, Sweden), Sound Islands ’15 (Singapore), and Temp’Ora (Bordeaux, France). He has released two albums with the Turkish improvisation group Islak Kopek as a performer and engineer and his music appears on a number of compilations. His 2008 album, Islak Kopek, was in the top 20 albums in Turkey for 2009. In de Knipscheer released a two CD set of his composition, Tropendrift, in 2006, a collaboration with Dutch poet Albert Hagenaars.

Dirk Stromberg is a founder of the Contemporary Music Festival in Vietnam (Duong Dai Festival – 2007-Present) and is currently on faculty at LASALLE College of the Arts. He was formerly on faculty as Istanbul Bilgi University, Saigon Technology University and School of the Arts (SOTA), Singapore.
