Entrance 7-12 euro (up to your offer)
Three performances by artists from iii:
- Etude No.2 for Sugar Instruments by Wen Chin Fu
- Transitory Presences #2 by Yolanda Uriz
- Nibiru by Mariska de Groot
This performance evening is the second half of a program presented in collaboration between iii, transmediale and Spektrum. The first performances take place February 3rd at the HKW World Stage.
The instrument inventors initiative (iii) represents a community of artists who’s practice involves the creation of unique media. The artists of iii draw upon materials, knowledge and skills from diverse fields, including visual arts, music, theatre, architecture, philosophy, psychology, computer science, engineering, chemistry and physics. Viewed aside from material, technical or disciplinary qualities, these media find a common origin in the necessity of their makers to negotiate a complex and changing cultural landscape. We suggest a paradoxical but powerful idea that science can be adapted to individual sensitivities, leading to a multiplicity of universal standards. http://iiinitiative.org
Sugar Instrument – Tang - Wen Chin Fu (2015)
Every material has its own hidden secret. By making, observing and listening we can find the entrance into this secret. Wen Chin Fu started experimenting with the acoustic potential of sugar during a residency in former sugar refinery in Taiwan in 2015 together with Mariska de Groot. Tang is a percussion instruments made of crystallized sugar that was developed during this residency.
Wen Chin Fu graduated in 2006 from the Classical Music Department of Shih Chien University, Taipei, and continued her studies at the ArtScience interfaculty of The Hague, where she graduated in 2010. Her performances explore the relationship between physical movement, sound and the environment. A key element of her practice is concentration, which opens the senses for perceiving things through new perspectives.
Transitory Presences - Yolanda Uriz (2015)
Transitory Presences is an encounter between scent, sound and ephemeral silhouettes, where aromatic smoke dances reveal the vibratory motion of sound. Volatile spirals and semi irregular shapes are sculpted in the vapours of lighted incense, held and set in motion by a vibrating speaker membrane and illuminated by pulsating light that reacts to the dynamics of the sound. This project, developed between 2014 and 2015, is presented in different formats, either as a solo performance, as an installation or in collaboration with other sound artists.
With a particular interest in the lower senses (smell, taste and touch), not only on their aesthetic potential, but also on their implication in politics, genre and perception, Yolanda Uriz´s work is an amalgam of elements from sound art, visual arts, inspiration from science and techniques from new media-art.
Nibiru - Mariska de Groot (2016)
No one ever discovered Nibiru – ‘Planet of crossing’- the ninth planet that passes our solar system ones in a 3000 years. During the performance De Groot intends to track the trace and shape of Nibiru with a simple, unstable human handmade apparatus made of scratch materials.
Nibiru is an analogue and mechanical performative installation wherein simple rhythmical body movements activates a squeaky pendulum drawing machine, that on its turn creates complex mathematical images.
Noises of resistance are amplified and sound patterns are created by light sensitive speakers that scan the changing projected geometric line image.
The patterns of light and sound refer often to the positions of the planets and provoke a desire for cosmic understanding of the organisation of space.
This work is made possible with the support of iii and FIBER Amsterdam in collaboration with Mirage Festival Lyon
Intrigued by the phenomena and history of optical sound, Mariska de Groot (1982, NL) makes and performs comprehensive analog light-to-sound instruments and installations which explore this principle in new ways. Her work often has a reference to media inventions from the past, with which she aims to excite a multi-sensorial and phenomenological experiences in light, sound, movement and space.
