Bischoff and Fei: Electronic Music Performance
John Bischoff and James Fei’s collaboration grows out of a shared interest in electronic systems that have complex behaviors of their own. While Bischoff’s implementation is primarily digital and Fei’s analog, performing for both is a negotiation with the electronics, each other’s improvisatory decisions as well as the acoustic qualities of the space.
John Bischoff
Bischoff’s recent work incorporates custom analog circuitry in sonic exchange with laptop synthesis. As he activates the circuit in performance, the resulting tones and noises are analyzed in real-time and used to inform an extended computer response. A binding together of the analog and digital realms is the result, the unique characteristics of each medium counterpoised in time to form a hybrid sensibility.

James Fei
For the past 15 years Fei has been working with a limited set of vintage Buchla modules complimented with homemade designs. Driven primarily by feedback, signals are circulated back into itself, through loudspeakers, spring reverb tanks, contact mic’d objects and translated between control voltage and audio.
