Marc Kate & Anton Lapov #137

Doors: 19:30
Start time: 20:00

Marc Kate
Marc Kate creates static experiments in synthesis that embody the opposite of New Age music. His scorched, spacious sounds, while haunting and etherial, are anything but spiritual. Instead, Kate’s sound is visceral, material and deeply human. Originally trained as a filmmaker and visual artist, San Francisco based producer and composer Marc Kate applies a cinematic and conceptual approach to sound and audio production. Faint outlines of melody and song are buried and burdened by an ocean of distortion: a calculated performance of cathartic release, pitting delicate gesture against brute force. Kate similarly creates a tension between serenity and dissonance, crossing vintage analog with laptop experimentation.

Anton Lapov - The Habitables
Audiovisual performance, followed by artist talk. Curated by Giada Dalla Bontà and Victoria Sarangova

This performance has been developed in context of the project The Habitables. The starting impulse of this long-term investigation was the intention to elaborate an interdisciplinary methodology based on the exploration of ecosystems via sonification practices and media-environmentalism. During two seasons of fieldwork at Azov Seashore of Biruchiy Island, Ukraine - in 2013 and 2015 - big datasets were collected. This datasets include field recordings, photos and tables of climatic information.

All collected data-arrays establish a basis for developing an “alternative topography” – new ways of researching and presenting spatial information. This performance could be considered as an attempt to go beyond the frameworks of the positivistic tradition of real-world data visual display. In this case, instead, an analytical model of investigation is realized by means of a generative audiovisual system, which has constant poly-variance potential prolonged in the time domain and is determined by a combination of input parameters, manipulated in real time by the performer.
