Sound Anatomy III: Axel Dörner & Richard Scott, Navs & Wolfgang Seidel
This evening presents two duets emerging from Berlin’s influential and long running Basic Electricity modular synthesizer series:

Navs and Wolfgang Seidel is a new collaboration from two of Germany’s most respected modular synthesizer players, spotted recently at the Superbooth event in the Funkhaus - Set 2: Axel Dörner & Richard Scott
Axel Dörner, extended with live electronic processing appears in duet with Sound Anatomy resident Richard Scott on analogue modular synthesizer. The two are launching their new Sound Anatomy digital release, Seven Types of Ambiguity on the same day as the performance.
Richard Scott is a free improvising electroacoustic composer working with electronics including modular synthesizers and controllers such as the Buchla Thunder and Lightning and his own self-designed WiGi infra red controller developed at STEIM. He has been composing and performing for over 25 years recently working with artists such as Evan Parker, Jon Rose, Richard Barrett, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Shelley Hirsch, Ute Wasserman, Michael Vorfeld, Frank Gratkowski and his own Lightning Ensemble. He studied free improvisation in the 80s with John Stevens, saxophone with Elton Dean and Steve Lacy, and electroacoustic composition with David Berezan and Ricardo Climent. He has released many albums, for example with Grutronic and Evan Parker for PSI records, The Magnificence of Stereo (sruti BOX) and has a solo double modular synthesizer LP, Several Circles and an album with Sidsel Endreson, Debris in Lower Earth Orbit, both due for release on CUSP Editions in 2015.
Axel Dörner has for the past 20 years developed a large vocabulary of techniques and sounds, combined into a highly personal language. Among others, he has collaborated with Phil Minton, Rudi Mahall, Kevin Drumm, Paul Lovens, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Sven-Åke Johansson, Sam Rivers, George Lewis, Evan Parker, Zeena Parkins, Lol Coxhill, Mats Gustafsson, Günter Christmann, Barry Guy, Andrea Neumann and Annette Krebs.
Born in 1949 in West Berlin in the last weeks of the blockade of the city by the Soviet army, Wolfgang Seidel found himself in the vicinity of Joseph Beuys’ student Conrad Schnitzler and the Zodiak Free Arts Lab in the 1960s. He played in Conrad Schnitzler’s group Eruption, an experimental unit which looked for new sounds and was among the founders of Ton Steine Scherben. Today he is active in Berlin’s thriving free improvisation scenes as a synthesizer player.
Navs is a broadcast journalist and co-host of Basic Electricity, a series of performance nights in Berlin, Germany, dedicated to improvisation with modular synthesizers. He narrated a film about modulars called I Dream of Wires and writes a blog called Navs Modular Lab. Fresh from performing at the Funkhaus, Berlin, Navs is looking forward to making more waves with Wolfgang Seidel.
