The duo 'zerfall_gebiete' blends the soft, acoustic, extended quasi-electronic sounds of Krieger with the elaborated electronics of Koener: the instrument sounds like electronics, the electronics sound like instruments and in the end it is unimportant who has done what, all becomes one. The different fields merge into a single, complex soundscape, which together with the visuals becomes an integrated experience. Dark Ambient drones, subtle noises, slow developing sensual textures, and an occasional hint of a melody…
Thomas Köner has established himself as one of today's most pioneering electronic sound-artists. For fifteen years he has worked on the archivation, modulation and construction of sounds and images. One could even talk of Köner´s audio-visual archive as being disjunctive: what you see relates not to what you hear, what you hear is hard to find in the image. The mix of image and sound is rather extraordinary. The soundscapes of Köner can be characterised by in-homogenous spaces, here the crashing of ice and the wave-patterns of snow. For Köner the space serves as a metaphor for the music.
In his visual work, reversed time seems, again, to serve as a metaphor for the visible; more precisely, movement subdues to images of time. Köner's image are Timepics. The paradox, that fast-forward on the time-scale generates effects of slowness or even standstill. This can be grasped since the images represent time as longevity and process rather than as a linear movement. Köner`s audio-visible archives evolve, and fulfill, what modern cinema on the one hand, and new electronic music on the other hand promise. Köner combines sound and image magnificent and takes the to the verge of new voyages.
Ulrich Krieger is a well-known artist and composer who has won several awards and residencies, including: New York (DAAD), Los Angeles, Venice, Rome, Bologna, Stuttgart, Darmstadt and others. In the past he had worked with: LaMonte Young, Phill Niblock, Elliott Sharp, Butch Morris, DJ I-Sound, Christian Marcley, Witold Szalonek, Mario Bertoncini, Merzbow, John White, and many more His composed works are widely performed by ensembles in Europe and the USA.
But his recent focus lies more in the experimental fields and fringes of contemporary pop culture, his old love: somewhere in the limbo between noise and heavy metal, ambient and silence. He collaborates with: Lou Reed, Text of Light, Lee Ranaldo, John Duncan, Zbigniew Karkowski, DJ Olive, Kasper T Toeplitz, Radu Malfatti just to name a few. He works with what he calls 'acoustic electronics': processing quasi-electronic sounds and using different ways of amplification, he gets down to the 'grains of the sounds', changing their identity and structure from within.
