workshop Projection Mapping with the Raspberry Pi Advanced

Learn to create compact projection mapping installations with Raspberry Pi and openFrameworks. During this two-day workshop you will learn how to set up the Raspberry Pi, use it to build your projection mapping project, back it up and restore it if needed. Advanced topics, such as preparing and cloning SD cards, autostart, custom generative sources, networking and projector blending will be covered. Limited amount of projectors and Raspberry Pi's will be available at the venue.

Have you ever set up a permanent projection mapping installation and did not want to leave your personal computer at the venue? You would like to make ten projection mapping objects, but your budget is too low to buy Mac Pro's? Using plain video sources seem too old-school and you want to map something that is real-time? You want to make your setup compact? If this sounds familiar, this workshop is for you.

OfxPiMapper is open source projection mapping software, an addon for the openFrameworks creative coding toolkit (openframeworks.cc), it runs on the Raspberry Pi (raspberrypi.org). Raspberry Pi is an affordable pocket-size mini-computer developed in the UK for teaching basic computing in schools. Nevertheless it has became popular among makers, designers and artists because of it's price and power.

Day 1

  • 10:00 - 13:00 Introduction. Burning SD cards. Mapping. Using own sources. Command line.
  • 13:00 - 14:00 Break.
  • 14:00 - 17:00 OpenFrameworks. Compiling examples. Creating new app.

Day 2

  • 10:00 - 13:00 Building an ofxPiMapper app. Custom generative sources. Coding.
  • 13:00 - 14:00 Break.
  • 14:00 - 17:00 Synchronizing. Projector Blending. Git and GitHub. SD card backup.

Requirements
You should be able to run openFrameworks example applications on your computer. Please install and and test it prior to the workshop. Get openFrameworks here: http://openframeworks.cc/download/

Workshop mentor
Krisjanis Rijnieks has been working with digital media since Macromedia Flash 4. Between then and now he managed to try out painting, drawing, illustration, VJing, 3D modelling, Flash, creative coding, projection mapping and digital fabrication. He studied painting at the Latvian Academy of Arts and Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan; later, new media at the Media Lab Helsinki. Most of the time he has been freelancing, lately working on projects related to creative coding, projection mapping and digital fabrication. Once a year Krisjanis teaches the Digital Fabrication Studio course at the Media Lab Helsinki. Has spent some time at the Fab Lab Berlin while developing a resource management system for them. He is author of the book Cinder–Begin Creative Coding, although in his work he prefers to use the open Frameworks creative coding toolkit. His main project now is the development of an open source add-on for open Frameworks which let’s one use the Raspberry Pi mini-computer for serious projection mapping projects.
